Round 1 is a knockout

What's not to like?
Thanks to all the organisers and some fantastic weather, the first round of the new improved club comp was terrific.
And thanks to Arkin there's a bunch of pictures at this link...

Awesome weather and a great

Awesome weather and a great crowd for the first round of the comp! Whilst I lacked the experience to make use of the few thermals that were providing the pros with a free ticket on the escalator, I still learnt a few things from my couple of sled runs and my time gazing up in to the sky thinking "Ï wish Ï was still up there too". Looking forward to the next round of the comp and hope to see a similar sized crowd with even more people telling me where to go :)

Thanks to everyone that provided me with some much needed "newbie" guidance.

Spring is in the air and hopefully me too!

Cheers,

Nigel

What a great turnout. We had

What a great turnout. We had heaps of pilots turn up, with enough drivers to get all the cars back down the hill.

James dived off first to show us how to do it, followed quickly by Scott. Unfortunately for James, he didn't turn his vario on until he was pretty much committed to landing, but Scott must have had his turned on as he pretty quickly disappeared up.

A short while later I dove off hoping to follow in Scott's example. I found some up stuff over the powerlines, but then lost it, and didn't feel like hanging around there in search mode, so continued down the ridge hoping to get somethign at the south end where the eagles live.

I found a little lift, and was working it up, but only really going up for about 75% of the way around, not quite finding the core, then Shane (I think) came over in a black Sting 3 and I thought cool, he can help me find this thing, but he just nabbed the turnpoint, and raced back north. I spent a few more minutes trying to find something to work, then as I was getting low, I followed a spur towards the bombout, and had a quick visit from a local before setting up for a landing up the slope.

Thanks to Arkin volunteering to drive for me, he was kind enough to come down and bring Nigel & I back up for a re-bomb. Following pretty much the same game-plan (which hadn't worked really well on the first flight d'oh,) my second flight was a little shorter than my first, but all in all, I had a great day out with a bunch of mates, got some time with my knees in the breeze and maybe nabbed a turnpoint or two.

I had modified my wibble-wobble nose boom mount, and successfully dampened it's shakiness, but by shortening and reinforcing all of the components, it roll rate has increased, instead of been dampened.

Here's a quick vid showing the locals coming up to say hi from my wing cam, you can see the nose cam rocking and rolling at times in the top right at times.

And the visit to the cheese factory in Pokolbin on the way home was greatly apreciated by our wives :)

Great start

Great start to the comp. Allan's weather was spot on!

It was typical summer thermal flying with small punchy thermals down low which improved once you got above the hill. For me this proved very difficult but others finished the course which was a back and forth affair between one end of the ridge and the other with a final skip over to Mt Olive for extra points. Landing at the LZ on the edge of the lake was magical and for some reason it takes much longer to pack up there.

Here's a few more pics.
