Paypal is a convenient way to pay for goods and services online, and also to make personal donations to your favourite hang gliding club.
When you set up a paypal account, you assign at least one funding source, but can assign multiple. Examples are your credit card and bank account. When you then use paypal to send money to someone, you choose which funding source you are going to use. If money is paid into your paypal account, either by you transferring it there from your bank account, or by other people making payments to your paypal account, your paypal account itself is then a funding source.
Paypal is not a charity, but a business whch is regulated like a bank. Just like all banks, Paypal is able to levy fees on certain transactions. Essentially, all transactions which paypal deem as commercial transaction attact a fee. I think it's something like 2%.
Personal transactions where the funding source is either paypal or your bank account do not however incur fees. To make a personal transaction, you the payer define it as such when making the payment. After defining a payment as personal, you then get to define it as either a gift, Living Expense, payment owed or other.
The screenshot below is the results of me making a $44.00 donation or gift to the club's paypal account at . you'll notice the fee total is $0.00, so neither I nor the club is being charged a fee.
